Martin D-45 Custom Guitar - 2400 in Lafayette, Indiana For Sale
This is a xxxx Martin D-45 Custom, serial number xxxx26, in excellent condition.
In xxxx, long before Martin started regularly re-issuing limited edition models and having special runs of custom built instruments.
This particular instrument is the very first one of those 91 custom made D-45's produced by Martin exclusively for the Mandolin Bros.
The plaque, as seen in the close-up of the neck block inside, reads: ?Exclusive series made for Mandolin Bros. LTD., Custom 01 of 91, Serial No. xxxx26.?
The features of this model include a very colorful Brazilian rosewood headstock overlay (or is that a tortoise shell-style material), C. F, Martin inlaid in pearl vertically on headstock, snowflake fingerboard inlays, scalloped bracing, tortoise shell-style pickguard, and pearl inlay on all edges of the top, sides, and back... just as the pre-war D-45's had.
About the only detail that keeps this model from being an identical reproduction of the original pre-war series is that in xxxx Martin used Sitka spruce tops with East Indian rosewood sides and back. The originals, of course, used Adirondack spruce and Brazilian rosewood. This guitar shows some light playing wear, primarily a few surface scratches, and minor nicks and dings, some very light finish checking on the top, and some pick wear outlining the edge of the pickguard close to the bridge, as seen in the close-up. The very beginnings of a small 1/2-inch long hairline crack, the typical ?E-string crack?, is so insignificant that it cannot be seen even with careful scrutiny of the close-up picture taken of the top, right in between the pickguard and bridge.
The original frets also show some normal playing wear, primarily in the first 3 or 4 frets, as seen in the close-up. There is no fret buzzing. The original small maple bridgeplate has a small reinforcing metal strip (bridgeplate mate?) that is located under the bridgepin holes. The neck is straight, and the neck angle is absolutely excellent. This guitar absolutely in no way would require a neck re-set. The 6th string height is perfect Martin specs... 6/64-inch at the 12th fret, and so is the first string, which is 4/64-inch. The fingerboard width is 1 11/16 inches at the stringnut.
The neck depth is medium, and the contour is a soft 'V' feel, and very very comfortable to play.
This extremely rare vintage D-45 guitar has just enough light playing wear to make it very usable for anyone to enjoy, without fear of putting some wear on an otherwise ?mint? instrument.
